An example of COSTFORD’s attention to research relating to best practices in effecting human resource development for political, economic, and societal change is Thrissur District’s response in 1998 to studies that indicated establishing programmes to assist women was a priority development consideration. To this end, the Stree Shakthi project was launched with the aid of NABARD, District Panchayath, DRDA, Social Welfare Department, Lead Bank, voluntary agencies and with COSTFORD as coordinator. Formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) was a key feature of this poverty alleviate programme to empower women. By 2000, Stree Shakthi Kendram was established as a District-level resource centre for women.
